In contemporary Bangladesh, ordinary citizens are facing a terrifying new reality: exorbitant and absurdly inflated electricity bills. In a country where a low-income or middle-class family’s monthly electricity bill should ideally range between 300 to 500 BDT, households are instead receiving bills totaling 30,000, 40,000, or—in shocking and unbelievable cases—over 400,000 BDT!

Social media is currently flooded with heartbreaking news and reports regarding this crisis. Innocent citizens are forced to pay the heavy price of sheer negligence by meter readers and data entry errors by system operators.

Why Is This Happening?

Investigations reveal that these “ghost bills” are primarily driven by two major factors:

  • Negligence of Meter Readers: Often, meter readers record estimated or fabricated numbers without actually checking the physical meters.
  • Data Entry Errors: In this era of digitalization, a single accidental extra zero typed into the software instantly turns a 300 BDT bill into 3,000 or 30,000 BDT.

Ordinary Lives Threatened

Day laborers, rickshaw pullers, and low-income families who struggle to make ends meet are devastated when handed an electricity bill running into tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of taka.

  • Office Harassment: To get these errors corrected, victims are forced to run back and forth between local Rural Electricity (Palli Bidyut) offices, wasting time and money.
  • Red Tape and Corruption: In many instances, the process of correction becomes a breeding ground for bureaucratic delays and unethical harassment.
  • Panic and Mental Stress: Fearing sudden disconnections and drowning under crushing, unpayable debts, many citizens suffer severe mental distress.

Public Expectations Amidst This Crisis

At a time when the general public is already struggling with soaring commodity prices, these absurd and unjustified utility bills are making life completely unbearable.

We urgently demand that the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) and relevant authorities take immediate action to:

  1. Thoroughly investigate and correct every single inflated “ghost bill” immediately.
  2. Implement strict punitive measures against negligent meter readers and responsible staff.
  3. Ensure absolute transparency and accountability in the billing system to eliminate customer harassment.

Is there anyone listening to the cries of these ordinary people? A single oversight or act of negligence must no longer threaten the lives of innocent citizens—this is the earnest expectation of the entire nation today.
