Gross Negligence in Fish Fry Release Programs: Innocent Lives Lost Due to Lack of Awareness

On September 1, 2026, a fish fry release program was organized at the Crescent Lake in Zia Uddin, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on the occasion of the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP. Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman attended as the chief guest, releasing fish fry into Crescent Lake and planting trees at the site.

However, this commendable initiative was overshadowed by severe mismanagement and a shocking lack of awareness by the organizers. A significant number of fish fry died inside the polythene bags before they could even be released into the water. In video footage circulated on social media, the Prime Minister himself was seen pointing out the dead fish and expressing his dissatisfaction. As the incident sparked widespread debate, the Nationalist Fishermen’s Association (Jatiyatabadi Motsojibi Dal), an associate body of the BNP, stated that strict security protocols caused the fish-filled polythene bags to remain sealed for an extended period, leading to a fatal lack of oxygen. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries clarified that they had no role in managing the event, noting that such an outcome could have been avoided had a professional government team handled the setup.

Notably, this is not an isolated incident. During the 2001–2006 BNP government tenure, when Tarique Rahman served as the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General, a similar incident occurred at the same Crescent Lake, where fish fry died inside polythene bags due to oxygen deprivation during a release drive.

Despite a gap of over two decades, protocol-heavy arrangements and political zeal have once again led to the tragic loss of innocent aquatic life. Using security protocols or political crowds as an excuse for risking animal lives reflects extreme irresponsibility. Concerned citizens strongly demand that future political or state events prioritize proper planning, environmental awareness, and animal welfare over superficial showmanship.
